Sudbury Local 786 represents the Sudbury, Parry Sound, Sault Ste. Marie, Huntsville region up to the 50th parallel.

Their membership includes 550 structural ironworkers & welders, and 150 rebar ironworkers.

Their work is mostly maintenance, involving the steel industry in Sault Ste. Marie, nickel producers in Sudbury, as well as repair work and infrastructure, hydro and institutional construction projects.

Demand from employers is described as ‘good', depending on the world prices for precious and other metals. The future may well continue steady demand, as plans are being discussed for hydro project construction and a large, new chromium mine in Sudbury.

Local officials say they expect a significant number of members will be retiring in the next five years, opening up possibilities for younger and new members.

The Local has an active training program in both Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie.
