The sheer magnitude of the Greater Toronto Area is providing the 1,700 ironworkers and 600 rodmen of Local 721 with plenty of work, despite the current absence of very large projects.

Local 721's area includes 4 major automobile assembly plants, 4 hydro and 2 nuclear power plants, several major cement plants and many cogen plants, all of which require maintenance and occasionally undertake expansion.

Of course, the ongoing building boom in downtown Toronto is another big factor – anywhere you see a crane downtown, Local 721 is likely to be involved. Members also work on plenty of infrastructure and public institution projects, and the union has moved strongly into residential window and curtain wall installation.

The local is dedicated to training younger people. About 20% of its membership are apprentices.
