IW in Windsor
Local 700's region includes Windsor, Sarnia, London and other parts of southwestern Ontario.
It has about 1,000 members, about 85% of whom are structural ironworkers or welders.
Current demand is slow as a result of the automotive industry's reduced output. Members also work on projects associated with oil and chemical refineries in Sarnia and institutional construction in and around London. Future opportunities could be provided by pipeline expansion feeding refineries in Sarnia, and by a go-ahead on the planned new International bridge at Windsor.
Local 700 trains more than 80 apprentices per year in its $2 million training facility, providing formal training in both structural and reinforcing ironwork right up to the Journeyman level.
