UA Local 496-our main website

The men and women of UA Local 496 are big believers in keeping our skills right out there on the front edge, up to date – always! – with new materials, new tools and evolving construction technologies.

We have invested a lot in the Calgary & District Piping Industry Training School, a superbly equipped, 10,000 square-foot operation incorporated into our South Calgary headquarters. Fully two-thirds of our Local's annual budget is allocated to training!

Our staff of 10 instructors, all certified by or enrolled in the UA's Great Lakes Training Centre at Ann Arbor, Michigan, deliver a 10-month program of day and evening apprentice and journeyman upgrading, as well as safety courses.

Subjects include:

  • Steamfitting
  • Plumbing
  • Pressure Welding
  • Gasfitting
  • Rigging
  • Med Gas
  • Blueprint Reading
  • Math & Science Upgrading
  • Better Supervision
  • UA Foreman's Course
  • Computer Instruction – including CAD and Auto-CAD

The quality of our training program and staff has been recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training. By the fall of 2010, we'll be certified to deliver the formal technical training portions of apprenticeship programs!

As we said, our training equipment is superb. In each of our 14 welding shop bays, for example, you'll find the equipment for every welding process. We use Lincoln and Invertec, and soon we'll have the brand new Millers in each bay as well.

Evenings and weekends, members can come in and practice or learn – free of charge.

All of our training programs are free to Members as well!
